Cell Biology
Client: Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine
Project Scope: Colimore Thoemke Architects provided architectural services for the renovation / conversion of 4,315 SF of existing office space into wet laboratories, tissue culture areas, equipment rooms, a temperature-controlled room, computer workstations, and offices on the ground floor of the Hunterian Building for the Department of Cell Biology. The renovated area is a portion of a larger complex of occupied buildings. The project began with a feasibility study to evaluate the proposed schematic design and to analyze the mechanical/electrical systems and the effect of the proposed design on the overall building. Renovations included a significant reconfiguration of the electrical distribution system and coordination of utility shutdowns on eleven floors which was required to accommodate the bench layout. The existing building included a double-loaded corridor and the new layout eliminated this corridor in favor of integral circulation within the laboratory.
Completion Date: 2003
